On September 24, US federal prosecutors officially indicted Ryan Routh, the suspect accused of using a rifle to shoot former President Donald Trump at a golf course in Florida on September 15.
The Justice Department announced that a federal grand jury in Miami had unanimously approved the indictment that afternoon. Routh had previously faced two counts of gun possession after being caught pointing a rifle at Trump at a golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Notably, a day before his indictment, federal prosecutors announced that Routh had written a letter months earlier outlining his plans to “ plot to assassinate ” Donald Trump. The letter was found in a box sent by the suspect to the home of an unidentified witness. When Ruth was arrested, the witness turned the box over to police, which contained bullets, a metal pipe, a phone, and several letters.
Ryan Routh is currently in custody awaiting trial.
